Here's what 18 celebrities looked like before they were covered in tattoos

miley cyrus tattoos before and after

From Kylie Jenner to Dame Judi Dench, it seems like every celebrity has at least one or two pieces of ink.

But these 18 famous faces have taken their commitment to body art to a whole new level, basically using their skin as one big canvas. But do you remember when they had completely unmarked bods? Justin Bieber might now have completely covered his chest and arms, but when he first arrived on the scene, there wasn't a tat in sight.

Keep reading to see what these famously inked celebs looked like before (and after) they got the tattoo bug.

Justin Bieber claims that his tattoos took "over a hundred hours of hard work on my body and I wouldn’t take back a single one."

In addition to two complete sleeves and a covered chest, Bieber also has multiple tattoos on his legs and back. According to PopStarTats, he has at least 59 pieces of ink all over his body.

Lady Gaga has multiple tattoos dedicated to her fans who call themselves "Little Monsters."

The singer has at least 21 tattoos, according to PopStarTats. Among them she has a monster's paw (an homage to her fans, whom she calls "Little Monsters"), a Mother Monster tattoo (also for her fans), and the words "Little Monsters."

Besides honoring her fans, she has a portrait of David Bowie (one of her musical idols), and a trumpet to commemorate her time with iconic singer Tony Bennett (the two collaborated on 2014 album "Cheek to Cheek").

David Beckham's body his truly his canvas — he has over 40 tattoos to prove it.

The Daily Mail created a graphic to explain what each of Beckham's 40 tattoos mean. Among our favorites are his Sanskrit tattoo that translates to "Victoria," two cherubs representing two of his sons Brooklyn and Romeo, "Pretty Lady" for his daughter Harper, and the Jay-Z lyric "Dream big, be unrealistic."

Lady Gaga is launching a makeup line and has been low-key teasing it for months

Lady Gaga

  • Internet sleuths have discovered a trademark filed by Lady Gaga’s company on February 22 for a cosmetics line.
  • The line is called Haus Beauty, and has license to create products in 38 different categories ranging from makeup to skincare to fragrance.
  • Fans have already begun inquiring about the line on Lady Gaga’s latest Instagram posts, which they believe contain subtle previews of Haus Beauty.

It seems as though there are fewer celebrities out there without their own makeup lines than with, but this particular one is long overdue. Some Internet sleuths Little Monsters, no doubt discovered a trademark filed by Lady Gaga's company Ate My Heart Inc. for a cosmetics line called "Haus Beauty."

The trademark, filed on February 22, gives Haus Beauty enormous range (38 different categories, to be precise), listing everything from lipsticks, eyeshadows, perfumes, lotions, and nail polishes to more unpredictable wares such as body masks, laundry products, and self-tanning milks, whatever those are.

And though a trademark application does not a cosmetics company make, fans believe Lady Gaga has been dropping subtle hints on her Instagram. Could this strong look be a low-key teaser of Haus? The emerald cat eye, pink blush and matching lipstick would indicate Gaga, ooh la la! (Yes.)

Comments have begun to pile up on Gaga’s latest posts (serving a variety of strong makeup ~looks~) asking about the details of Haus Beauty.

A post shared by Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) on

"I'm ready to go broke buying up all of your makeup," wrote one user. "Drop the details on ur makeup line, pleaded another, "Please be more than 30 foundation shades!" Many requested Gaga to make her line cruelty free and vegan.

The last time superfans discovered a cosmetic line trademark it was for Fenty Beauty, and we all know how that turned out (fabulously, for those of us that don’t.) The fact that Gaga did not tag her makeup artists in recent Instagrams also points to Haus Beauty’s imminent drop. Now that’s something worthy of  ..."Applause."

14 celebrities who used to be strippers

Stars like Channing Tatum and Cardi B are known for their success in movies and music. But before breaking through Hollywood, they took jobs as strippers to earn money — and they're not the only stars who have turned to exotic dancing.

There are many other celebrities who revealed that they were strippers, whether it was for a weekend, a few months, or several years.

Keep reading to find out which celebrities shared this same job.

"Real Housewives of Atlanta" star NeNe Leakes worked as an exotic dancer for years, and views the experience as empowering.

In her 2009 memoir titled "Never Make the Same Mistake Twice," Leakes explained what prompted her to start stripping. At the time, she was a single mother struggling to pay rent and support her son. Leakes took a job as a stripper under the name "Silk" and said that she felt "powerful" as a dancer.

"With every piece of clothing I took off, the more I got my life back," she wrote. "I worked this body like a well-oiled machine, and every movement got me closer to my goal of financial independence for me and my child."

"Magic Mike" is loosely based off of Channing Tatum's days as a stripper in Florida.

Fans of Tatum are probably aware that the actor was an exotic dancer before starring in movies like "21 Jump Street" and "Step Up." Pre-Hollywood, Tatum used to perform at a strip club in Tampa, Florida.

A video sold to Us Weekly in 2009 showed Tatum — who went by the name "Chan Crawford"— dancing for guests who were clearly pleased with what they saw. Tatum has spoken openly about his past. In 2011, he told GQ that he's "not ashamed," nor does he "regret one thing."

Though Tatum isn't hesitant to discuss his time as a stripper, he has made it clear that he doesn't miss it.

"I don't miss anything about stripping,"he told People in 2017. "I stripped in Tampa for like, 25 girls, at best. It wasn't glamorous whatsoever, so there's nothing that I miss about stripping."

Rapper Cardi B has repeatedly opened up about her time as a stripper — and she's not stopping any time soon.

Cardi B started stripping as a young adult and did it for three and a half years. During an interview on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in April 2018, she explained that the job helped to pay her bills, afford an apartment, and invest in her goal of becoming an artist.

She also said that by the time she was 20 years old, she had accumulated approximately $20,000 from her work.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Cardi B said that she continues to be vocal about stripping because she feels as though people who work in that industry aren't respected.

Kesha accused Dr. Luke of raping Katy Perry in a text message

Kesha

  • Kesha accused Dr. Luke of raping singer Katy Perry, according to court documents filed by his attorney in a defamation suit against Kesha.
  • Kesha has also accused Luke of verbally, physically, and sexually abusing her during her time recording with him at Sony.
  • Kesha has tried unsuccessfully to free herself from her record contract with his label, Kemosabe, and Sony.

Kesha accused Dr. Luke, her former producer and mentor, of raping singer Katy Perry, according to court documents obtained by Variety.

For years, Kesha has been engaged in a legal battle with Luke (real name: Lukas Gottwald), who she alleges drugged and sexually and verbally assaulted her during her time recording with him at Sony. She has sought to get out of her record contract with Luke's Kemosabe label, though her legal claims have not been successful. Luke countersued her, alleging defamation (the court documents are part of that case).

In 2017, Kesha released her first album in five years, in which she addresses her situation with Luke in songs like "Praying." But she had not publicly shared an accusation that Luke raped Perry, which she made in a text message to singer Lady Gaga in 2016, according to court documents filed by Luke's attorney.

“On February 26, 2016 [Kesha] sent a text message to Stefani Germanotta p/k/a/ Lady Gaga which repeated [Kesha’s] false claim that [Luke] had raped her," the attorney wrote. “[Kesha] also falsely asserted that [Luke] had also raped Kathryn Hudson p/k/a/ Katy Perry."

“Following this text message conversation, and with [Kesha’s] encouragement, [Gaga] spread negative messages about [Luke] in the press and on social media,” his attorney continued.

Reps for Perry were not immediately available to comment, but she has never made any public allegation of sexual assault against Luke.

Dr. Luke's legal team provided the following statement to Business Insider: "Katy Perry herself confirmed that Dr. Luke did not rape her. Kesha's accusation to the contrary — just like her other outrageous lies about Dr. Luke — is baseless and irresponsible, and it is disrespectful to both Katy Perry and Dr. Luke. In his defamation lawsuit against Kesha, Dr. Luke seeks damages for the harm caused by these malicious falsehoods."

Reps for Kesha declined to comment to Variety and did respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Reps for Lady Gaga were not immediately available to comment.

  • Celebrities from entertainment and sports are guests of Google Camp 2018
  • The annual event, organized by Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, is taking place in Sicily.
  • Basketball legend Michael Jordan is rumored to be attending this year.

The “conference” known as Google Camp is not your typical sleep away.
This is not the Catskills.

Few campers are likely to careen down any ziplines or go tubing.

This is an ultra-exclusive, super-secret, three-day gathering in Sicily of elite actors, fashion designers, media tycoons, models, pop stars and athletes hosted by Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

Certainly, the name can be misleading.

“My dumbass thought it was an actual summer camp sponsored by Google for really, really smart kids,” one person posted to Twitter on Tuesday.

Larry PageWhat actually is accomplished at these annual events, typically held in sunny and sandy locals, is not altogether clear. In past years, attendees have toured local ruins, enjoyed sumptuous meals and attended discussions on various topics.

It’s fun to imagine attendees laughing derisively at the plebeians who frequent other conferences, like the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The Financial Times identified the guests at Google's event as the ".0001 percent."

This year's event is being held at the Verdura Resort in Sicily. According to some tabloids and British newspapers, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Matthew McConaughey Bradley Cooper, and Leo DiCaprio are all in attendance this year. Former Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordan is rumored to be on his way.

Last year, campers included Snapchat cofounder Evan Spiegel, Pharrell Williams and Prince Harry.

  • She wrote: "We have to work harder to change the culture."

Rick Genest, known as 'Zombie Boy' for his distinctive tattoos and famous through appearing in Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" video, has been found dead in his home.

The Canadian fashion model was found in his home in Montreal on Wednesday, according to Radio-Canada. He was 32.

Media reports, and people close to him including Lady Gaga, have said he took his own life.

Radio-Canada reported his death, citing police sources who suggested it was suicide.

Gaga responded soon after, writing on Twitter: "The suicide of friend Rick Genest, Zombie Boy is beyond devastating.:

"We have to work harder to change the culture, bring Mental Health to the forefront and erase the stigma that we can’t talk about it"

"If you’re suffering, call a friend or family today," she added. "We must save each other."

Genest had his breakthrough role in Laga Gaga's 2011 music video, in which she painted her face similar to his tattoos and the pair wore tuxes.

In a second tweet, Gaga wrote: "Science tells us that it takes 21 days to form a habit, if you’re suffering from [a] Mental Health issue I beckon for today to be your first day or a continuation of the work you’ve been doing."

"Reach out if you’re in pain, and if you know someone who is, reach out to them too." she tweeted.

Genest was involved with a Canadian charity, the Home Depot Canada Foundation, which raises awareness of youth homelessness.

In his modeling career, Genest appeared in Vogue Japan, featured on the cover of Dazed magazine and modeled for major brands like Thierry Mugler. He also featured in the BBC TV show "Silent Witness."

His management agency wrote on Facebook that it was "shocked and saddened" by the death.

The statement (in French) said: "Zombie Boy, RICO, was loved by all who were lucky enough to meet and get to know him. An icon in the fashion world and in the art scene, known for going against the grain of pop culture, Zombie Boy, touched the hearts of many."

"After receiving the sad news in the early afternoon, our team rushed to the side of his family and loved ones to support them in this dark and difficult time. We offer them our deepest condolences and will see to it his legacy lives on," the statement continued.

"Thank you, ZB, for the wonderful moments in your company and for your beautiful smile."

Genest currently hold two Guinness World Records: one for the highest number of insect tattoos on his body — 176 — and another for the highest number of tattoos of human bones — 139.

lady gaga a star is born

  • Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper star in the upcoming movie "A Star Is Born," which is scheduled for release on October 5.
  • Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the singer and actress said that when Cooper (who is also the director) showed her a cut, she "burst into tears."
  • "I literally cried watching the whole movie," Gaga said.

Lady Gaga leads the highly anticipated movie "A Star Is Born," and said that she got emotional after watching it for the first time.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Oscar-nominated singer opened up about her experience seeing a version of the film, in which she and co-star Bradley Cooper (who also directed the film) play love interests Jackson and Ally.

The actress told EW that Cooper "was so kind" throughout the whole process and was by her side when she saw a cut of "A Star Is Born."

"He flew to me where I was, and he played it for me and some friends of mine," she recalled. "I just remember that from the very first frame, I just burst into tears. I literally cried watching the whole movie."

The 32-year-old added that she "had to watch the film several times before I could watch it as an audience member, if that makes any sense."

This is the fourth iteration of "A Star Is Born"— the previous versions came out in 1937, 1954, and 1976. In the 2018 version, Gaga's character is a struggling musician named Ally who doesn't "feel comfortable" singing her own songs because people have told her that they "liked the way I sounded but that they didn't like the way I look." Jackson (Cooper) is an established performer who convinces her to take a chance on herself, as he battles his own personal issues.

You can watch Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in "A Star Is Born" when it hits theaters on Friday, October 5. You can watch the trailer below:

  • Bradley Cooper directed "A Star Is Born," an upcoming movie in which he co-stars with Lady Gaga.
  • According to the Los Angeles Times, Cooper went to Gaga's house for her audition.
  • When he saw her, Cooper told her to take her makeup off.
  • He was already holding a makeup-remover wipe.
  • Gaga's character in the movie wears minimal makeup and starts out with low self-esteem.
  • "It put me right in the place I needed to be, because when my character talks about how ugly she feels — that was real," Gaga told the LA Times.

Actor Bradley Cooper directed and stars in the upcoming movie "A Star Is Born," where he plays a successful musician named Jackson Maine struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction until he meets a new muse-turned-girlfriend, Ally — played by none other than Lady Gaga.

In a new profile from the Los Angeles Times, Gaga revealed the unusual audition experience that led to her landing the co-starring part:

"She walked downstairs and there he was, staring at her. He stepped toward her, examined her face: concealer, mascara, rouge.

'Take it off,' Bradley Cooper told Lady Gaga.

She noticed something in his hand. It was a makeup wipe. With it, he erased the colors from her forehead down to her chin.

This is the woman Cooper wanted in his film, 'A Star Is Born.' Not the pop star masked with face paint and headdresses and hairpieces. Just Stefani Germanotta. 'Completely open,' he said. 'No artifice.'"

Gaga's character Ally is described in Warner Bros. official synopsis as a "struggling artist" who has "just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer."

In the official trailer, we see Ally tell Jackson (Cooper) that she doesn't sing her own songs because "almost every single person has told [her] they like the way [she] sounded, but not the way [she] looks."

According to Gaga, the way Cooper removed her makeup helped her get into the right mindset for her audition.

"It put me right in the place I needed to be, because when my character talks about how ugly she feels — that was real," Gaga told the LA Times. "I'm so insecure. I like to preach, but I don't always practice what I preach."

The movie is already getting Oscar buzz among excited fans, many of whom are most anxious to hear the original soundtrack (on which both Gaga and Cooper sing). Gaga herself said watching the movie for the first time made her "burst into tears."

This will be Gaga's first leading role in a feature film, though she's already won a Golden Globe for her role in the TV series "American Horror Story."

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga received an 8-minute standing ovation for 'A Star is Born'

  • Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "A Star is Born" debuted at the Venice Film Festival.
  • Though the film's debut suffered a malfunction due to lightening, it was praised when it ended.
  • Cooper, also the film's director, and Gaga received an eight-minute standing ovation.
  • The movie premieres in theaters October 5.

The world premiere of "A Star Is Born" received a warm eight-minute ovation at the Venice Film Festival after the musical drama's gala screening was marred by a roughly 15-minute interruption due to a technical glitch caused by lightning.

After loud cheers and clapping following the end credits, Lady Gaga smiled and looked relieved and director Bradley Cooper said "thank you for staying!" as the Warner Bros. delegation left the Palazzo del Cinema auditorium.

The screening went black about an hour into the movie, just after a burst of clapping greeted the first duet between Cooper and Lady Gaga. When the light was turned back on there was clapping at first, then increasing tension filled the room as a voice said in Italian that the screening would resume as soon as possible. Then Lady Gaga, after sitting very still, began blowing kisses to the audience, which cheered. "You are amazing!" said one spectator, which stoked the clamor.

Sources close to the producers said the glitch was caused by lightning during a heavy rainstorm on the Lido which blew out the projector's light bulb.

Though the interruption broke the film's emotive flow, it also created an intimacy of sorts and will certainly go down in the Venice Film Festival's annals.

Earlier, Gaga in a fluffy pink Valentino gown, and Cooper, sent fans and paparazzi into a frenzy under a light drizzle as the aria "La Donna E’ Mobile" from Verdi's Rigoletto played loudly. Cate Blanchett, Donatella Versace and Spike Lee were also spotted.

Early reviews of Cooper's directing debut have ranged from warm to rapturous. Variety's Owen Gleiberman called it "A transcendent Hollywood movie."

Jessica Kiang, writing for the Playlist, said, "It's going to be a phenomenon, and it's my happy duty to report that it's also very good."

The film co-stars Cooper, Sam Elliott, Andrew Dice Clay and Dave Chappelle.

  • "A Star is Born," starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
  • Critics say it's a moving musical drama that hits the right notes, with excellent performances from both stars.

"A Star is Born" premiered at the Venice Film Festival this weekend ahead of its October 5 US release date. According to critics, it's a solid musical drama with transfixing performances Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, who is a "revelation."

The movie is a remake of several other versions of the 1937 film of the same name. This one stars Cooper — also making his directorial debut — as a country singer past his peak and Lady Gaga as his ingenue who eclipses him in fame.

How does it stack up? Here's what the critics are saying.

It hits all the right notes

"The new generation supplants the existing one. For one star to get an award, a handful of defeated nominees have to swallow their pain, as the spotlight moves away from them. For one star to deliver the shock of the new, another one has to receive the shock of the old. 'A Star Is Born' turns that transaction into a love story."

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw

The new songs are good but not great

"Given that the original soundtrack (much of which was written by Gaga and performed live at various arenas and festivals, including Coachella and Glastonbury), [the movie] contains some catchy tunes but no cast-iron earworms."

Little White Lies's Adam Woodward

Ga-ga, ooh-la-la

"The big question that’s been hovering in the air for months is, Can Lady Gaga act? It’s a ridiculous question. Singers often make fabulous actors. They’re primed for it: All singing is acting. But what’s surprising about Gaga is how charismatic she is without her usual extreme stage makeup, outlandish wigs and inventive costumes. It’s such a pleasure to look at her face, unadorned, with that extraordinary, face-defining nose — it’s like discovering a new country."

— Time's Stephanie Zacharek

She's a great singer, of course

"Their voices melt together on the line 'We're far from the shallow now,' we melt along with them, and when Ally suddenly sends the song into a higher register, you will feel tingles rippling through your body. It’s an absolutely ecstatic moment, because it’s about the fusion of these two voices and souls, about Jackson coming back to life, about Ally realizing her destiny, and about the audience’s rediscovery of what romance in a movie can still be: a volt to the heart."

Variety's Owen Gleiberman

Cooper's performance is excellent as well

"Cooper's portrayal of a broken-down man is a heartbreaking wonder. Speaking in a low-octave growl and looking like he hasn’t showered in a month, Jackson carries himself as if he’s fully aware of his impending doom. If the bottle won’t kill him, the cocaine he smashes with a worn boot on a table might. The drunken, grizzled star isn’t exactly a novel character — Jeff Bridges won an Oscar for a similar role a decade ago in 'Crazyheart.' But Cooper, who also does his own plaintive vocals, has never exposed himself like this. That adds an extra layer of fascination."

Us Weekly's Mara Reinstein

His directorial debut is impressive

"Behind the camera, Cooper has clearly pledged allegiance not to the 1937 or 1954 'Stars' but to the naturalistic New Cinema style of his ’70s predecessor, all long highways, canyon light, and sun-flared closeups. His camera works with a kind of feverish intimacy, closing in as Ally’s profile rises and Jackson stumbles back toward the bottle. That closeness also becomes a bell jar that descends over the film, keeping the audience locked into the couple’s growing unhappiness (and by extension the airless, lonely disconnect of fame)."

Entertainment Weekly's Leah Greenblatt

Their relationship seems raw and real

"What keeps the film from feeling like a mere rehash is the gut-level romanticism of it all. I’ve heard the rumors that Cooper and Gaga are barely speaking to each other on the press circuit, but you’d never be able to tell that from their on screen chemistry, which is raw and real even if it shows all the telltale signs of unsustainable infatuation."

Vulture's Emily Yoshida

And the entire movie has a gritty realism to it

"The result is a 'Star Is Born' that injects its interactions with plain-spoken rawness and believability. You see that not only in the skittish romance at its heart, but via concerned looks from Jackson’s father-figure road manager (a terrific Sam Elliott, booming and righteous during his showdowns) or check-ins from Ally’s limo-driving, coulda-been-a-contender dad (Andrew Dice Clay, still on the dramatic upswing post–'Blue Jasmine'). The movie becomes a drug-addiction story, percolating with updated musical tensions between Jackson’s Neil Young-ish canyon lifestyle and Ally’s slick pop reinvention."

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are electric on screen together in the Oscar-worthy 'A Star Is Born'

A Star Is Born Warner Bros final

  • Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga make an electric combination in "A Star Is Born."
  • Cooper even does his own singing the movie's songs alongside Gaga.
  • The movie, which Cooper also directed, definitely lives up to the hype and will be an Oscar contender.

Going all the way back to 1937, Hollywood has been in love with the rags to riches story of “A Star Is Born.”

The movie that follows the overnight success of an aspiring singer has been done by the likes of Judy Garland (in the 1954 version) and Barbara Streisand (1976), and now Lady Gaga has added her name to the roster.

We know Gaga for her incredible singing and stage persona, but for at least the rest of this year she'll also be lauded for her acting abilities. She's incredible as Ally, who is discovered by the singer-songwriter Jackson Maine (played by Bradley Cooper), who mentors her into a superstar. The two eventually also fall in love.

And if Gaga's acting ability comes as a surprise, get ready for another — Bradley Cooper can direct (wait for it...) and sing!

"A Star Is Born," which opens in theaters October 5, marks the actor’s directorial debut and he crushes it as he weaves together a story filled with emotion and heartache about love, ego, stardom, and acceptance.

Following the 1976 rock-and-roll musical version, which was nominated for four Oscars and won for best original song, the project was looking to be told once again in a modern setting. Names like Clint Eastwood were floated as a potential director, and Beyoncé, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Will Smith were all rumored to star over the years, but for the most part the project lingered in development hell. But in 2016 it was announced that Cooper had signed on to not just star but also direct and the project was on the fast track, nabbing Gaga along the way.

The movie is fueled by the chemistry between Cooper and Gaga, who performed many of the songs featured in the movie in front of live audiences. Cooper holds his own in the singing department and brings a lot of empathy to his drug and alcohol-addicted rocker character with a troubled past. But it's watching Gaga belt out the ballads with ferocious intensity that will give you goosebumps.

Along for the ride is Sam Elliott, who plays Bobby, Jackson's older brother and the one person who has looked out for him his whole life as their father was a drunk. Cooper gives Jackson a deep, twangy voice that's almost spot on to how Elliott talks, which just adds fuel to the authentic feel of the brothers' love-hate-relationship.

In the other versions of this movie, much of the focus is on the female character. But in this one, the pulse is Jackson, whose self-destructive life only brings Ally closer to him, until finally it's too much for her to handle. The last third of the movie is heart-wrenching to watch, but you can't turn away as Cooper delivers a tour-de-force performance that will certainly garner him an Oscar nomination.

In fact, there might be a lot of Oscar notice for this movie. Along with Gaga and Elliott's top-notch work, the original songs are fantastic, and the editing flawlessly delivered the fast-moving lifestyle the two main characters live.

The hype for this movie is already through the roof, and all I can say is it lives up to it.

Bradley Cooper says Lady Gaga 'gave me the confidence' to sing in 'A Star Is Born'

  • Bradley Cooper told Vogue that Lady Gaga helped him prepare for "A Star Is Born."
  • He said she gave him the confidence to sing and play instruments in the movie.
  • Gaga told Vogue that she was impressed by his voice from the moment she first heard him.

Bradley Cooper credits Lady Gaga with helping him musically prepare for "A Star Is Born."

The 43-year-old actor told Vogue that he learned guitar, practiced with a vocal coach and a piano teacher for over a year, and wrote three songs for the movie "because of Gaga."

"She really gave me the confidence," he said.

Cooper plays rock star Jackson Maine in the musical drama, which he also directed, and all the music in the movie was shot live.

Gaga, 32, told Vogue that she was impressed the first time she heard Cooper sing.

"He sings from his gut, from the nectar," she said. "I knew instantly: This guy could play a rock star. And I don't think there are a lot of people in Hollywood who can. That was the moment I knew this film could be something truly special."

The two met at Gaga's home to discuss the movie and the role Cooper had in mind for the singer. Cooper asked if the two could sing together.

"She was kind of laughing at me that I would be suggesting this, but I said, 'The truth is, it's only going to work if we can sing together,'" Cooper said.

He chose the old folk song "Midnight Special," so she printed out the sheet music and he pulled the lyrics up on his phone. Gaga said she stopped playing the piano in shock and told Cooper that he had a "tremendous voice." She had the idea to record their singing, so Cooper pulled out his phone and did.

"It was crazy," he said. "It kind of just worked. And that video is one of the things I showed to Warner Bros. to get the movie green-lit."

"A Star Is Born" will be released in theaters October 5.
