  • Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper had an "instant connection" when they met.
  • Gaga spoke to Vogue about meeting with Cooper to talk about "A Star Is Born."
  • She said they had real chemistry.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper say they knew they had chemistry from the moment they met.

"The second that I saw him, I was like, 'Have I known you my whole life?'" Gaga told Vogue for the October cover story. "It was an instant connection, instant understanding of one another."

Gaga and Cooper star together in "A Star Is Born," which also marks Cooper's directorial debut.

The two play artists who meet and fall in love — Cooper as Jackson Maine, a rock star fighting an alcohol and drug addiction, and Gaga as Ally, a struggling singer.

Though Gaga and Cooper first officially met on the set of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" roughly five years ago, according to Vogue, it wasn't until Cooper caught a performance by Gaga in 2016 at a cancer benefit in Sean Parker's backyard that he thought she should be in the movie with him.

"She had her hair slicked back, and she sang 'La Vie en Rose,' and I was just...levitating," he told Vogue. "It shot like a diamond through my brain. I loved the way she moved, the sound of her voice."

Cooper called her agent and drove to her home the following day to discuss the movie.

"She came down the stairs and we went out to her patio and I saw her eyes, and honestly, it clicked and I went, 'Wow,'" Cooper said.

She then fed him some lunch, and they sang together.

Gaga told Vogue that Cooper's depiction of romance and fame in the movie is authentic.

"They're both very complex, layered things, with a lot of emotional depth, and he captured that," she said. "This is what I think makes the film so successful: that it was so real. And I've lived it, so I can testify to that."

"A Star Is Born" hits theaters on October 5.

  • The song is called "Is That Alright?"
  • The full soundtrack for the movie, which is entirely original songs performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, doesn't come out until the movie does on October 5.

The hype for "A Star Is Born," Bradley Cooper's directorial debut that stars himself and Lady Gaga in her first major role in a motion picture, is building and building.

On Monday night, Lady Gaga, who is a favorite to win an Oscar for best actress for her role in the film, shared a one-minute clip of a song called "Is That Alright?" The song is set to clips seen in the "A Star is Born" trailer.

"Is That Alright?" is a little more subtle than "The Shallow," the powerful song prominently featured in the trailer that inspired many memes for Lady Gaga's wail.

"A Star is Born," which will likely dominate the 2019 Oscars and is an absolute must-see, comes to theaters October 5. The soundtrack comes out on the same day.

How many times have you watched the trailer for "A Star is Born" just to hear the music? Now you can actually listen to one full song.

"A Star is Born," directed by and starring Bradley Cooper alongside Lady Gaga in her first major role in a feature film, is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. But the soundtrack isn't coming out until the film's release date, so all for months was the film's trailer, which features a clip of the epic ballad "Shallow."

"Shallow," performed by Cooper and Lady Gaga, was expected to premiere Friday. But it dropped Thursday at 12:30 PM Eastern time on Apple Music’s Beats 1 Radio with DJ Zane Lowe. It's available on iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube.

The song is as good as expected, with Cooper's Eddie Veder-influenced vocals a perfect complement to Lady Gaga's empowering and distinct voice.

Cooper and Lady gaga collaborated on the soundtrack with an assortment of country musicians including Lukas Nelson, who also appears in the movie. The soundtrack also features contributions from Jason Isbell, Mark Ronson, Diane Warren, and Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow. DJ White Shadow collaborated with Lady Gaga for the pop songs on the soundtrack.

On Tuesday, Lady Gaga released a condensed clip of another song on the soundtrack, called "Is That Alright?"

"A Star is Born" is a favorite for all major categories at the 2019 Oscars, and it's the third time the movie has been re-made. The first film came out in 1937, another starring Judy Garland followed in 1954, and another in 1976 starred Barbara Streisand.

"A Star Is Born" comes to theaters October 5. Listen to the full "Shallow" track here:

  • Lady Gaga revealed that someone once told her to get a nose job.
  • Gaga said even before she was famous she refused to change herself.
  • She said she also did everything her own way, regardless of what people wanted.

Lady Gaga said her physical appearance was criticized before she was famous but she refused to change anything.

"Before my first single ever came out, it was suggested I get a nose job," she told The Mirror. "But I said, 'No. I love my Italian nose.'"

The 32-year-old singer, who's making her acting debut in Bradley Cooper's "A Star Is Born," said she would do the opposite of what people asked of her.

"If people wanted me to look like a sexpot, I would look like the opposite," she said. "If they said, 'Try dancing and looking this way,' I would always flip it on its head and do it my way."

Gaga's insecurities and her own experiences helped shape her character Ally in "A Star Is Born." At one point in the movie, Ally talks about how she's been told her nose is too big for her to make it as a musician.

"When my character talks about how ugly she feels — that was real," Gaga told The Mirror. "I'm so insecure."

Gaga has spoken about her insecurities before. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Gaga said Cooper wiped makeup off her face during her audition.

"It put me right in the place I needed to be, because when my character talks about how ugly she feels — that was real," Gaga said. "I'm so insecure. I like to preach, but I don't always practice what I preach."

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's chemistry in 'A Star Is Born' is as strong as they say it is

Warning: Some minor spoilers ahead for "A Star Is Born."

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga have talked about their "instant connection" since the press tour for "A Star Is Born" began, and they are not overstating their chemistry.

In "A Star Is Born," which marks Cooper's directorial debut, Cooper and Gaga play musicians battling their own demons who happen to meet and fall in love. Cooper is Jackson Maine, a rock star fighting an alcohol and drug addiction, and Gaga is Ally, a struggling singer who's been told she doesn't have the physical appearance to make it.

From the first moment Jackson drunkenly walks into a drag bar and witnesses Ally sing "La Vie En Rose," you can instantly feel the electricity between the two. He works his way backstage after she finishes singing and asks if she'll join him for a drink. The two end up in a bar and a supermarket (for a reason I will not spoil here) where Jackson tells Ally she is beautiful. She sings for him, he's impressed, and as he drops her off at her home the next morning, he yells out of the car window so she'll stop and turn, "Hey, I just wanted to take another look at you."

That first night together is a catalyst in their tragic love story. After initially turning down Jackson's offer for Ally to join him on stage, she changes her mind. You can hear the initial fear Ally has when she joins Jackson onstage for the song "Shallow," as well as the raw emotion portrayed by both artists, which is helped in part by the fact that every song was sung live.

The scene where they meet was actually inspired by a real life experience. Cooper knew he wanted Gaga as his co-star after watching her sing at a 2016 concert benefit in Sean Parker's backyard.

"She had her hair slicked back, and she sang 'La Vie en Rose,' and I was just...levitating," he told Vogue. "It shot like a diamond through my brain. I loved the way she moved, the sound of her voice."

He called her agent, set up a meeting, and drove to her home the following day.

"She came down the stairs and we went out to her patio and I saw her eyes, and honestly, it clicked and I went, 'Wow,'" Cooper told Vogue.

Gaga said in the same interview, "The second that I saw him, I was like, 'Have I known you my whole life? It was an instant connection, instant understanding of one another."

Throughout the movie, you can feel the love in every stare, the sadness in every fight, and the heartache in every struggle. Cooper and Gaga's emotions are palpable, and it makes the movie stick with you hours after leaving the theater. It's an impressive feat for a project that is both Gaga's acting debut and Cooper's directorial debut.

While you wait to watch the film yourself, take a look at all the best moments between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper while on the press tour for "A Star Is Born."

Cooper said they bonded over their shared Italian roots.

During the movie's press conference at the Venice Film Festival, Cooper and Gaga talked about how they bonded over the fact that they both grew up in Italian families.

Cooper said, "I remember when we first met, after 10 minutes we were eating homemade food that she cooked — I love to eat — and that was actually a huge bond that we both came from East Coast Italian-American families. So we had a real synchronicity on that level from our upbringing."

Gaga said Cooper wanted her to wipe all of her makeup off before her audition.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Gaga talked about how Cooper wanted her to be fresh-faced for her audition. He handed her a makeup wipe and said, "Completely open. No artifice."

Gaga explained how it boosted her confidence, saying, "It put me right in the place I needed to be, because when my character talks about how ugly she feels — that was real. I'm so insecure. I like to preach, but I don't always practice what I preach."

Cooper and Gaga revealed they had developed a sort of shorthand while working together on set.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Cooper used to whisper "Tony" at Gaga if he wanted to "evoke a feeling of warmth" because he knows that Gaga and Tony Bennett have such a close relationship. He also reportedly said things like "ninja" or "assassin" if he wanted her to focus.

Lady Gaga reveals the real tragedy behind the tearful final scene in 'A Star Is Born'

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for "A Star Is Born."

Lady Gaga has an incredibly heartbreaking scene at the end of "A Star Is Born," and her emotions in that moment were real.

During an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, the 32-year-old actress and singer revealed the day she filmed that scene, she received a phone call saying her longtime friend Sonja Durham, the managing director of Haus of Gaga, wasn't doing well in her battle with stage 4 breast, brain, and lung cancer.

"I left the set … I didn't even stop to see Bradley [Cooper]," she told Lowe. "I just got in my car and started driving, and I missed her by 10 minutes."

I don't know how to put a price on a friendship. I'm not even sure how you can assess the size of its meaning, only really your heart truly knows and it's too special for words. I feel two competing feelings. Firstly, that I will live everyday with more passion, more determination, more compassion and more giving than ever before. Because that's who she was, and it's what drew us to each other, and I know it's what she always wanted for me. She had this incredible way of releasing me from the anchor of my own sadness that held me back, she loved me fearlessly while I learned how to cope with fame and stay inspired no matter how scared I was. She knew all I cared about was the music. She made that ok. The other feeling I have is that of being robbed of the last 10 years of my life, friendship and career with her. Like someone took her from us, and with that taking took all the good times. I know that's not true, and I know that I have those memories forever, I'm just in shock that I will never have new ones with her. I'm in shock that I won't see her again until I pass too. I vow to be a little stronger everyday for her because that's what she would have wanted, I vow to be stronger for anyone who's lost somebody to cancer. I'm a part of that family now. I vow to be a warrior for her and be a voice for cancer patients so the world can continue to improve the dialogue and the fight. I loved her. I still love her. And I love so much her husband Andre, stepson Sante, and friends. I made them some food yesterday. I will keep cooking. Cooking my soul until it understands this. Last thing I told her, "Go find Joanne, Sonj." Somehow I think she did. @sonjad7777 #sonjadurham #grigiogirls

A post shared by Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) on May 21, 2017 at 5:57pm PDT on

Gaga lay with her friend for a while before telling Durham's husband that she didn't know what to do. He told her that she needed to do what Durham would've wanted Gaga to do — go sing.

"She gave me a tragic gift that day, and I took it with me," Gaga said. "I went back to set, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very same day, within an hour."

In "A Star Is Born," Gaga's character, Ally, meets and falls in love with Jackson Maine, a musician played by Cooper. Maine commits suicide towards the end of movie and Ally's final scene is a tribute to her late husband. She tearfully sings "I'll Never Love Again," a song Maine wrote for her, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

bradley cooper lady gaga a star is born

Gaga said Cooper didn't pressure her into doing the scene more than she needed to, but she told him that she just wanted to sing.

"I remember after one take, he took the monitor and he brought it to me, and he showed me what is the last frame of the film, and he said to me, 'This is going to be the last frame of this movie,'" she said. "She becomes famous in the film, but a star is not born until the end. I think the star in this film is human courage. It's bravery."

serena williams lady gaga harry styles met gala 2019 cochairs theme camp

  • On Tuesday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that its Costume Institute's fashion exhibit for spring 2019 will be "Camp: Notes on Fashion."
  • The exhibition will be framed around Susan Sontag's 1964 essay, "Notes on 'Camp,'" for the Partisan Review.
  • The essence of camp is a love of artifice, exaggeration, and the unnatural, Sontag wrote.
  • Following tradition, the 2019 Met Gala will feature the same theme.
  • The gala will be co-chaired by Anna Wintour, Serena Williams, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, and Alessandro Michele.

Say goodbye to halos, headpieces, and "Heavenly Bodies," and wave hello to camp.

On Tuesday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced on Vogue that its Costume Institute's fashion exhibit for spring 2019 will be "Camp: Notes on Fashion." Following tradition, next year's Met Gala — the museum's annual fundraising benefit for the Institute and one of the biggest nights in the fashion world — will feature the same theme.

What is camp?

The exhibition will be framed around Susan Sontag's 1964 essay, "Notes on 'Camp,'" for the Partisan Review — a hugely influential piece that arguably introduced camp as a concept to mainstream culture.

In her essay, Sontag identified camp not as a strictly-defined idea but rather a "sensibility" that rejects aesthetic judgment on a scale of good to bad, offering art and life a "supplementary set of standards." At its essence is a love of artifice, exaggeration, and the unnatural.

"Camp is playful, anti-serious," Sontag wrote. It celebrates "'style' over 'content,' 'aesthetics' over 'morality,' and 'irony' over 'tragedy.'"

flapper style

Speaking to Vogue, Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute, said that camp, which "has become increasingly more mainstream," embraces elements such as parody, theatricality, extravagance, and nostalgia.

Its many iterations in culture today include "political camp, queer camp, Pop camp, the conflation of high and low, [and] the idea that there is no such thing as originality," Bolton added.

According to Bolton, contemporary examples of camp in fashion include Virgil Abloh's little black dress printed with the words "Little Black Dress" on the side from Off-White's Pre-Fall 2018 collection; Cristobal Balenciaga's 1957 Baby Doll dress; and Franco Moschino's "Too much irony!" shirt from Moschino's Spring/Summer 1991 collection — to name a few.

The 2019 Met Gala will have five co-chairs

The event will take place on Monday, May 6, 2019. It will be hosted by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour — who has chaired the gala since 1995 — along with Serena Williams, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, and Gucci's creative director Alessandro Michele.

Made possible by Gucci, "Camp: Notes on Fashion" will be presented in the Met Fifth Avenue's Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall from May 9 to September 8, 2019.

According to the Met's website, "Camp: Notes on Fashion" will explore the origins of camp as an aesthetic,  its evolution from the margins of society to the mainstream, and its influence in the fashion industry.

There's already a ton of buzz about next year's Met Gala co-chairs

After the Met's announcement, Twitter was flooded with excited reactions from fans of Serena Williams, Lady Gaga, and Harry Styles.

People also can't wait to see the camp-themed red carpet looks

The Bradley Cooper-directed film "A Star Is Born" has been making headlines lately for its Oscar-worthy performances.

In the movie, Lady Gaga took on a whole new persona for her standout lead performance as singer Ally, and her transformation brings back memories of her ever-evolving style.

Mother Monster, as the pop star is known to her fans, has been a chameleon of fashion ever since she first arrived on the celebrity scene back in 2008 with "Just Dance." In particular, Gaga's red carpet looks fully encapsulate her entire brand: You never know what you're going to get with the Manhattan-born singer.

Below, see some of Lady Gaga's most memorable red carpet looks.

Lady Gaga made a fashion statement at the NewNowNext Awards in her early days of fame.

The NewNowNext Awards at MTV studios in 2008 was one of Lady Gaga's first major appearances after she put herself on the map with "Just Dance."

Her ensemble — which one might call "Old School Gaga"— consisted of her then-signature blunt, platinum bangs, circular sunglasses, and bodysuit.

She's changed her look up countless times throughout her career, but this appearance set a precedent for red carpets to come.

She rocked a 19th-century inspired gown at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

Gaga experimented with her style for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and went with a period outfit as her ensemble of choice for the red carpet.

She donned a featheredneck brace and a "Phantom of the Opera"-like mask while her baby pink hair added a modern twist.

Galactic fashion took a front seat at the Grammy Awards in 2010.

Lady Gaga chose a lilac, galactic-style red carpet dress for the 52nd annual Grammy Awards.

It was one of the first times the singer took an outfit to the next level with a prop. Not only did her dress boast rings around it, but she carried what appeared to be a shimmering star to tie the look together.

  • Lady Gaga was honored at Elle magazine's annual Women in Hollywood event on Monday night.
  • During her speech onstage, she thanked "my fiancé, Christian [Carino]."
  • Although fans had previously speculated about the couple's engagement, this moment marked the first public confirmation.

On Monday night, Lady Gaga seemed to publicly confirm that she is engaged to Christian Carino.

The singer and "A Star is Born" actress was honored at Elle magazine's annual Women in Hollywood event in Los Angeles. During her speech onstage, she made a point to thank Carino — and, according to multiple outlets, explicitly called him her fiancé.

"Thank you to all the loved ones in my life," she said, as reported by Us Weekly. "Everyone at table five. My fiancé, Christian. All the loved ones in my life who take care of me every day."

It's not clear when exactly the proposal took place. Gaga attended the Grammys in January wearing a giant diamond ring on her wedding finger, which sparked reports of an impending wedding.

She has been flaunting the same pink ring at various red carpet events, including the London premiere of "A Star is Born" in September.

"Christian is a good, grounding force and understands her career. She's in a great place now," an anonymous source told People earlier this month, when speculation of the couple's engagement hit a fever pitch.

The two have remained rather private since news broke of their relationship in February 2017. They were originally spotted cuddling at a Kings of Leon concert, and the CAA talent agent — whose clients include high-profile names like Justin BieberMiley Cyrus, and Jennifer Lopez— was seen supporting Gaga at her Super Bowl LI halftime performance last year.

In September 2017, Gaga revealed the reason she had split with her former fiancé and longtime love, actor Taylor Kinney. The couple broke up while she was filming her documentary "Gaga: Five Foot Two."

The "Joanne" singer said that her starring role in "A Star Is Born" led to their split — seeming to imply that Kinney was intimidated by her success.

"My love life has just imploded," she said. "I sold 10 million [records] and lost Matt. I sold 30 million and lost Luke. I did a movie and lose Taylor. It's like a turnover. This is the third time I've had my heart broken like this."

Carino, whose talent agency also represents Gaga, didn't immediately return INSIDER's request for comment or official confirmation of the engagement.

  • On Monday night, Lady Gaga attended Elle magazine's Women In Hollywood Celebration.
  • The star wore an oversized Marc Jacobs suit.
  • During the event, Gaga gave an emotional speech in which she not only confirmed her engagement to Christian Carino but also spoke at length about power dynamics in Hollywood and how her experiences as a survivor of sexual assault and living with chronic pain impact her life.
  • She said she wants to push back against power structures and she's starting with how she dresses.
  • "I had a revelation that I had to be empowered to be myself, today more than ever," Gaga said. "To resist the standards of Hollywood, whatever that means. To resist the standards of dressing to impress. To use what really matters: my voice."

On Monday night, Lady Gaga attended Elle magazine's Women In Hollywood Celebration wearing an oversized Marc Jacobs suit.

During the event, Gaga gave an emotional speech in which she not only confirmed her engagement to Christian Carino, but also spoke at length about power dynamics in Hollywood. She detailed how her experiences of sexual assault and chronic pain have made her reconsider the entertainment industry.

Gaga told the audience that as she got ready for the event, she started to think about what it truly means to be a woman in Hollywood.

"We are not members of a giant beauty pageant meant to be pit against one another for the pleasure of the public," she said, per Elle. "We women in Hollywood, we are voices. We have deep thoughts and ideas and beliefs and values about the world and we have the power to speak and be heard and fight back when we are silenced."

Gaga said she "tried on dress after dress today getting ready for this event, one tight corset after another, one heel after another, a diamond, a feather, thousands of beaded fabrics," but nothing felt right — until she saw the suit.

"So, after trying 10 or so dresses, with a sad feeling in my heart, that all that would matter was what I wore to this red carpet, I saw an oversized Marc Jacobs suit buried quietly in the corner," she said. "I put it on to a resounding view of eyes glaring at me in confusion."

Gaga said when she put on what she described as "an oversized men's suit made for a woman," she started to cry because she "felt the truth of who I am well up in my gut."

"As a sexual assault survivor by someone in the entertainment industry, as a woman who is still not brave enough to say his name, as a woman who lives with chronic pain, as a woman who was conditioned at a very young age to listen to what men told me to do, I decided today I wanted to take the power back," she said. "Today, I wear the pants."

She continued: "I had a revelation that I had to be empowered to be myself today more than ever. To resist the standards of Hollywood, whatever that means. To resist the standards of dressing to impress. To use what really matters: my voice."

Read a portion of her speech focusing on her decision to wear the suit below, per Elle:

I tried on dress after dress today getting ready for this event, one tight corset after another, one heel after another, a diamond, a feather, thousands of beaded fabrics and the most beautiful silks in the world. To be honest, I felt sick to my stomach. And I asked myself: What does it really mean to be a woman in Hollywood? We are not just objects to entertain the world. We are not simply images to bring smiles or grimaces to people's faces. We are not members of a giant beauty pageant meant to be pit against one another for the pleasure of the public. We women in Hollywood, we are voices. We have deep thoughts and ideas and beliefs and values about the world and we have the power to speak and be heard and fight back when we are silenced.

So, after trying 10 or so dresses, with a sad feeling in my heart, that all that would matter was what I wore to this red carpet, I saw an oversized Marc Jacobs suit buried quietly in the corner. I put it on to a resounding view of eyes glaring at me in confusion. "But the Rodarte was so beautiful!" one said. "But the Raf Simons for Calvin Klein was so stunning on you!" said another. "But what about the Brandon Maxwell? What about the Dior?" Lots of questions. They were all dresses. This was an oversized men's suit made for a woman. Not a gown. And then I began to cry. In this suit, I felt like me today. In this suit, I felt the truth of who I am well up in my gut. And then, wondering what I wanted to say tonight became very clear to me.

As a sexual assault survivor by someone in the entertainment industry, as a woman who is still not brave enough to say his name, as a woman who lives with chronic pain, as a woman who was conditioned at a very young age to listen to what men told me to do, I decided today, I wanted to take the power back. Today, I wear the pants.

In an age where I can barely watch the news, I gasped at the unjust men, and some women, quite frankly, that I see running this country. I had a revelation that I had to be empowered to be myself today more than ever. To resist the standards of Hollywood, whatever that means. To resist the standards of dressing to impress. To use what really matters: my voice.

Lady Gaga's pink engagement ring is estimated to be worth $300,000, and it looks a lot like the ones Princess Eugenie and Kate Middleton wear

Dedicated Lady Gaga fans have spent the past year speculating whether the entertainer is engaged.

After Elle magazine's annual Women in Hollywood event, where Gaga called her agent, Christian Carino, her "fiancé" in her award-acceptance speech, it's safe to say fans were right about her pink gem all along.

In November 2017, Us Weekly reported that the couple had gotten engaged over the summer, but Gaga was first spotted wearing the ring at the Grammys in January.

Gaga has worn the gem at just about every occasion since, most recently while attending multiple screenings of her film "A Star Is Born."

Lady Gaga's engagement ring could have cost up to $300,000

Gemologist and diamond expert Grant Mobley told INSIDER that Gaga's "timeless design" features a rare, high-quality stone and could have cost nearly $300,000.

"The ring features what appears to be an oval, pink sapphire around six carats, surrounded by a halo of round diamonds looking to be around three carats in total," Mobley said.

"Estimating the value of such a ring is not easy without details on the center stone, but this one looks to be of incredible quality, making it rare and probably valued at over $300,000."

Mobley also said Gaga's engagement ring is "fit for music royalty," which is perhaps a fitting statement.

Princess Eugenie's ring similarly features a pink sapphire gem and is surrounded by a diamond halo.

While it's unknown how much Princess Eugenie's ring cost, it does appear to be a bit smaller than Gaga's and therefore probably cost a little bit less.

Kate Middleton's ring, which previously belonged to Princess Diana, is also of the same shape and style.

Rather than a pink gem, Middleton's engagement ring features a blue sapphire surrounded by a 14-diamond halo. It's also more of an oval shape than the circular rings owned by Eugenie and Gaga.

According to Mobley, the diamond-halo style that the three rings share "represents enduring love" and will "be in style for a long time to come."

'A Star Is Born' choreographer says the movie nails its depiction of the music industry: 'This is how artists view each other'

  • Richy Jackson, who has worked with Lady Gaga for eight years, was the choreographer for "A Star is Born."
  • Jackson spoke to INSIDER about the vibe on set, which he said was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
  • Jackson also discussed the differences between Lady Gaga and her character Ally, especially when it came to their movement on stage.
  • He also told INSIDER that the movie's depiction of a country star who hates pop music is accurate to how musicians across different genres view each other in real life.

As Lady Gaga's choreographer and visual director for the past eight years, Richy Jackson has choreographed iconic music videos including "Poker Face,""Paparazzi,""Bad Romance,""Born This Way,""Telephone," and "Just Dance."

Jackson has also worked on Gaga's world tours including Monster Ball and ArtPop, as well as her record-breaking Superbowl halftime show in 2017.

In "A Star is Born," in theaters now, Lady Gaga plays Ally Maine, an aspiring musician. When she meets Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper), a famous country music star and alcoholic, her career as a pop artist skyrockets as his declines. In the film, Jackson Maine is not shy about expressing his hatred toward pop music, which has sparked much debate among audiences.

Jackson created the choreography for "A Star is Born," which includes Gaga's intimate performance of "La Vie En Rose" in a small bar to a highly produced "SNL" performance. In personality and performance, Gaga's character Ally Maine is completely different from Gaga's pop persona in real life. And Jackson's intimate knowledge of Gaga's own vision was a huge reason why he was asked to join the project, because of all people, he can create something different.

Jackson also appears in the movie as Ally's choreographer. Jackson spoke with INSIDER about how he got involved in the film, what the vibe was like on set (you could hear a pin drop), and we also got his opinion on the film's seemingly negative take on pop music (Jackson doesn't necessarily see it that way).

INSIDER also asked Jackson about director and star Bradley Cooper's makeup ban that Lady Gaga has discussed while promoting the movie. But Jackson said he wasn't on the set long enough to know anything about it.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Carrie Wittmer: How did you get involved with "A Star is Born" to the point where you got to appear in the movie as Ally's choreographer?

Richy Jackson: After the Superbowl, there were talks of Gaga doing "A Star is Born" with Bradley Cooper. And after Coachella that year, Bradley and his team asked me to choreograph. I came on and initially, it was to just make her [Gaga] into Ally. To have her move differently, have her become the character. Because the biggest thing was to have Lady Gaga not play Lady Gaga. It was all about making Ally move, look, feel, and perform differently than Lady Gaga. Halfway through production, Bradley [Cooper] was like, "well, we are looking for a choreographer to be in the movie." And I was like, "Uhhh, hello!?" He was like, "Do you wanna do it?" And I was like, "Yes!!" So I got to shoot my three or four scenes. I had a great time.

Richy jackson Lady Gaga

Wittmer: How did you use movement to define Ally as a character separate from Gaga?

Jackson: After reading the script and listening to the music, which was completely different from anything Gaga has ever done, I came on set to watch them shoot a few scenes. It helped me to understand more of who Ally was and how she should be when she performs.

Wittmer: What are the biggest differences between Lady Gaga and Ally?

Jackson: [Laughs] Lady Gaga knows exactly who she is as a pop star and what she wants to accomplish. She has her own vision. Pop star Ally didn't know what she was getting into and rolled with the punches.

A Star is Born

Wittmer: How did you incorporate Ally's inexperience into her movements on stage during her pop performances?

Jackson: When Ally performs "Heal Me," which is her first performance as a pop star, that's her sort of getting used to moving to this music. She's on stage just feeling it out, going through the motions. Even her hand waving, she'd never done that before. But she's thinking, "I'm up here by myself, and the crowd's into it. Let me just see what happens if I do this."

Wittmer: What's the difference between choreographing an actual live performance compared to a fake one that will be filmed?

Jackson: Lady Gaga's concert performances are on such a huge stage and it's a two-hour show. So there's a lot more that has to go into that because we have to entertain for two hours. For a movie, it's about what do we want to catch. I have to think, "What does Bradley [Cooper] want to actually catch out of these moments?" It didn't have to be as extensive as a concert, so we didn't have to do as much. If it's just a piece of the song that he needs, we can just choreograph a piece of that song instead of doing the song in its entirety.

A Star is Born 2018

Wittmer: What's harder to choreograph?

Jackson: To me, choreographing for the film was easier. Especially because we had Bradley, who's very inspiring and he's always there asking questions. When Gaga performed "La Vie En Rose" in the drag club, that was her and I working together to see how we wanted her to move through the bar. And then Bradley came in and said, "OK, this is great, I can shoot it like this." It was a great collaboration.

A Star is Born 2018

Wittmer: What was the vibe like on set? It's almost like a romantic comedy at first, but then it takes an incredibly dark turn.

Jackson: It was ... it was very quiet, in the best way.  There are so many great moments — intense moments. But the set was quiet because we knew what was happening in the end. I mean, you could've heard a pin drop. It was so real.

bradley cooper Lady gaga a star is born

Wittmer: A lot of people believe that because Jackson hates Ally's pop songs, that the film (and Bradley Cooper) hates pop music. What do you think the movie is trying to say about the genre?

Jackson: The movie is trying to get to people who are into rock and alternative or country to look at pop music and R&B. Rock, alt, and country musicians might consider their art real music whereas pop artists consider their art real music. It's interesting because it's so real. This is how artists view each other. It isn't that the movie thinks the music is bad: it's what those artists actually think of each other. And it's something I've always heard.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's 2018 film "A Star Is Born" is the fourth reboot of the time-honored story of a fading musician and the struggling artist he falls in love with.

You may have heard about Cooper and Gaga singing together for the first time at Gaga's Malibu, California, home or how the Oscar contender wowed audiences at the Venice Film Festival, but there are plenty of other interesting tidbits about the film.

Here are 15 things you might not have known about "A Star Is Born."

Other versions of the movie could've included Will Smith and Jennifer Lopez or Beyoncé and Leonardo DiCaprio.

As per Newsweek's reports in 2002, Will Smith was courting Jennifer Lopez for the project, saying it might work if they can get their schedules together.

Smith wanted to show off his singing skills by playing the role Gaga had in the latest movie, and he wanted Lopez to take on the other leading role.

And Clint Eastwood wanted to direct the film with Leonardo DiCaprio as the washed-up star and Beyoncé as his romantic lead, according to Deadline's reports.

In 2012, Variety reported that Beyoncé was apparently on board to start filming the remake, but her pregnancy pushed back the film's start date for nearly a year. Eventually, she reportedly fell out of the project.

Bradley Cooper learned how to play guitar and piano for his role.

In an interview with W Magazine, Cooper said he spent six months learning piano and guitar for his role.

"We mapped out my entire schedule, day by day," Cooper said. "I'd wake up and work out, followed by two hours of guitar practice and two hours of piano lessons."

The doctor in the film is Cooper's real-life ear doctor.

Cooper told People that his real-life doctor, Derek Jones, plays his fictional ear doctor in the film, Dr. Slattery — a small but pivotal role.

Cooper also told People that the role of Tommy is played by someone he went to grad school with. "So many of the people in this movie are people I've known forever," he said.
