Lady Gaga Sings About Ways To Get 'Cheap Applause' In SNL Monologue

Lady Gaga opened "Saturday Night Live" by saying it has been her life long dream to host the show.

The "Applause" singer, who was both host and musical performer on Saturday, then went on to explain "There are two kinds of applause: the kind you earn or cheap applause, which you get by pandering to the audience."

Gaga then immediately busted into a Broadway-type number explaining the various ways she gets cheap applause.

A few suggestions Gaga says always get people clap:

  • "Can I hear it for the ladies?"
  • "Make some noise if you're from out of town."
  • "Put your hands together if you want to end childhood obesity."
  • "Do you guys want me to come out there and say hello?"
  • "Give it up for teachers!"
  • "Give it up for first responders!"
  • "Give it up for two people working out their differences!"
  • "Live from New York it's Saturday night! I know somebody already said that but it always gets your applause."

Kanye West And Kim Kardashian Slam Apple 'Genius' In 'SNL' Skit

Kanye West Kim Kardashian Lady Gaga SNL“Saturday Night Live” mocked Kim Kardashian and Kanye West with a sketch about the couple having a morning show called “Waking Up With Kimye.”

In the skit, West explains how he turned a whiny Kardashian into “an artist,"“philosopher,” and fashion icon.

But the real fun begins when host Lady Gaga appears as the first guest on “Waking Up With Kimye" as an Apple store “Genius Bar” employee, who West says doesn’t deserve to be called a “genius” — like him and Kim.

The exchange, mocking West's love of publicly calling himself a genius, goes like this:

Kanye: "Karen, tell people what you do at the Apple store."

Apple employee: "I help customers fix problems with their Apple computers."

Kanye: "Huh? And that somehow makes you deserving of the title 'Genius'?"

Apple employee: "Well I work at the Genius Bar, so it's just a term Apple came up with."

With that, West freaks out, yelling: "You do not deserve the title of genius! You cant just throw that term around! Mark Zuckerberg is a genius. I am a genius, I am a god. Kim is a genius!"

Then West makes the Apple employee have a fashion face off in a segment called "Kim Wore It Better." You can guess who won.

Lady Gaga's ARTPOP Album Flop Expected To Lose Label $25M In Marketing Costs

Lady Gaga VMA

Lady Gaga’s new album “ARTPOP” has had plenty of promotion behind it, but sales are expected to fall well short of her previous offering, “Born This Way.”

First-week sales of roughly 260,000 copies are projected for the pop diva’s new release, according to Billboard. That would be a more-than 75 percent drop-off from her prior album, which bowed with 1.1 million units moved.

That impressive prior number was undoubtedly bolstered by an Amazon.com promotion that sold “Born This Way” for 99 cents during two days of its initial week. Billboard estimates that the MP3 marketing play accounted for 440,000 of the platinum-plus open. So crunching numbers, that means “ARTPOP” is still only paced to sell 40 percent of the Week 1 copies that “Born This Way” did at full cost.

That flop may not just end with bad press.

The underwhelming sales may lose Interscope Records $25 million in promo campaign costs, according to a story published at Examiner.com on Saturday.

TheWrap‘s calls to the singer’s reps and Interscope on Sunday and Monday weren’t immediately returned.

“ARTPOP” is still expected to debut at No. 1, unseating Eminem’s “Marshall Mathers LP II” — which by comparison sold 792,000 albums in its debut. That mark was good enough to place “MMLP2″ second in 2013 openings, behind Justin Timberlake and above Drake. Miley Cyrus’ “Bangerz” launched with first-week sales of 270,000 last month. Two weeks later, Katy Perry’s “Prism” debuted with 286,000 first-week sales. But neither of those are considered breakout hits.

The soft sales for Gaga’s latest, coupled with the massive promo spend, could cause layoffs of Interscope employees, most likely around Christmas, according to the Examiner report.

The singer’s new album may get a boost from her guest hosting stint on “Saturday Night Live,” but her last tour failed to sell out, reviews of “ARTPOP” have been mixed and its first single, ‘Applause,” peaked at No. 5 on the charts.

Interscope Records, based in Santa Monica, Calif., was founded by Jimmy Iovine in 1989 and is a part of the Universal Music Group. The label is home to more more than 100 artists, including Eminem, the Rolling Stones and Madonna.

Remember when Lady Gaga arrived at the 2011 Grammy Awards in an egg vessel?

Well, the singer just tried to one-up herself Sunday by arriving at the American Music Awards red carpet on a half-mechanical, half-human horse looking like Donatella Versace.

Gaga, who was just announced as the new face of Versace, wore a lavender gown by the designer for the occasion.

Gaga explained that her inspiration was Bianca Jagger arriving to Studio 54 on the back of a white horse. Except Jagger's horse was real while Gaga's was operated by two people.

A Japanese Sex Doll Company Is Now Making Life-Size Lady Gaga Replicas

gaga doll thumbLady Gaga debuted her Jeff Koons' designed "Artpop" album cover on a Times Square billboard, wore an actual flying dress for the record's launch party, and gave a couple of weirdly sexual live performances with R. Kelly for her single "Do What U Want."

And in Japan, she's got "Artpop" playing out of life-size "Gagadolls."

There is a fairly well-documented sex doll subculture in Japan, and one of its leading manufacturers is Orient Industry. Gaga and Universal Music Group's Japanese branch recruited the company to make replicas of the pop star.

In this wonderfully creepy "making of" video, you can see Japanese craftsmen create the doll as a sinister soundtrack transforms into the single "Applause." Enjoy watching a group of men saw, stitch, paint, and mold a silicon-based naked woman, in a factory full of fake body parts, before handing it over to a "passionate" fan:

The doll plays "Artpop" in its entirety, as well as a several other recorded phrases from Gaga, when someone puts his or her head to its chest.

It's yet to be revealed whether the Gagadolls "function" in the same way that Orient Industry's other products do, or when they will go on sale.

Gaga recently visited Japan, where she posed with the replicas:

Despite reports that Gaga's label Interscope was furious over the lackluster opening sales of "Artpop" compared to those of its predecessor, "Born This Way," it is currently the No. 1 album in both the U.S. and Japan.

'Politicizing Beyoncé' And Other College Courses Inspired By Musicians

Beyonce:Jay Z

This week, a story about a Rutgers University course that focused on Beyoncé and American gender and sexual politics bubbled back into the spotlight, as stories on the Internet sometimes do.

Unfortunately for those who hoped to jumpstart a major in Beyoncé (good luck with that!), the class was actually offered two years ago — even though it would most certainly be worth revisiting now that she's released BEYONCÉ, an epic feminist album that just happens to have a few domestic violence jokes thrown around for good measure.

Beyoncé is one of several pop culture figures to inspire serious study. Here are a few of the other pop-oriented classes that have been offered in the United States:

"Bruce Springsteen's Theology"
This seminar at Rutgers offers "a theologically oriented approach" to Bruce Springsteen's lyrics, examining his interpretations of Biblical themes.

"Sociology of Hip Hop: Jay-Z"
Sociology professor Michael Eric Dyson, who taught courses on Tupac Shakur and Marvin Gaye at the University of Pennsylvania, offered this course at Georgetown University in 2011.

"English 2169: Jay-Z and Kanye West"
This University of Missouri course takes a close look at the careers of Kanye West and Jay Z in relation to the notion of the American Dream.

"Lady Gaga and the Sociology of the Fame"
Sociology professor Matthew Deflem encouraged students to think about "how Lady Gaga has become this thing, this event, on a social level, and on a global scale" at the University of South Carolina in 2009.

"GaGa for Gaga: Sex, Gender, and Identity"
A similar course at the University of Virginia that explored the singer's pushing of social boundaries in 2010.

"The Phenomenology of Performance: David Bowie"
University of Southern Maine professor Shelton Waldrep has been teaching this seminar, a critical look at Bowie's cultural significance and his blurring of the lines between high art and pop, for ten years.

"The Textual Appeal of Tupac Shakur"
Graduate student Georgia Roberts led this University of Washington comparative history of ideas course in 2003.

"Madonna the Phenomenon"
This happened at the University of Amsterdam in 1997:

“Spirituality & Politics of U2”
Saint Mary's University offered this course, which takes a closer look at the spiritual and political messages in U2's music, for the January 2012 term.

The Beatles
There are so many college courses on the Beatles the New York Times wrote an article about it.

"Michael Jackson: The Business of Music"
This MBA course at Clark Atlanta University focuses on Michael Jackson's business practices, including "how he negotiated and his tours, record deals, and merchandising [and] how he revolutionized legal practices related to entertainment copyrights, trademarks, licenses."

Fans Call Out Lady Gaga For Posting Metallica Concert Photo As Her Own

On Saturday, Lady Gaga posted a photo of what was supposed to be her outdoor concert in Quebec.

The only problem? The pic was from a 2011 Metallica show.

Gaga captioned the pic: "Those little dots are fans, and that's our stage and lights beaming from the center. Unreal 90,000 ppl showed up! What a magical night #artraveQuebec."

But fans were quick to call out the singer for her flub:Lady Gaga instagramGaga later (sort of) admitted to stealing the pic via Twitter:

Then she got a little feisty taking a dig at rival Madonna, who has accused the younger pop star of copying her in the past:

Here's how the two images compare, the Metallica concert is the top image while the real Gaga show is below:lady gaga concert comparison

To the singer's credit, the Metallica concert did take place at the same venue three years ago — but Gaga's appearance at Festival D'été reportedly drew 40,000 people less than the 130,000 fans who showed up for Metallica's previous show at the same event.

Lady Gaga Has Turned Her Instagram Selfies Into Ads For A Japanese Beauty Brand

Lady Gaga Shiseido

Lady Gaga has taken 50 selfies that have acted as the centerpiece for the Japanese beauty brand Shiseido's ad campaign during one of Japan's busiest shopping periods.

The pop star, infamous for her Instagram selfies, has become the face — and the photographer — of Shiseido’s 2015 New Year’s campaign, according to WWD.

A Lady Gaga Shiseido ad appeared in numerous Japanese national and regional newspapers over the New Year's period. Forty-six of the photos were published on New Year's Day, with the remaining four pushed out Friday.

The fan site Gaga Media has compiled a list of most of the images that appeared in Japanese newspapers.

The ads are not set to appear outside of Japan, but the campaign has garnered worldwide attention thanks to Gaga's 4.8 million Instagram followers. Some of the ads that appeared in the newspapers (such as this one) were also posted on her Instagram account.

Making the activity all the more interesting is the fact that Gaga has failed to mention the selfies are part of a marketing push, or any affiliation with Shiseido. If anyone were to complain about the lack of signposting, Gaga and Shiseido could incur the wrath of advertising regulators.

In November, for example, a marketing push from the Mondelez cookie brand Oreo featuring popular YouTube stars taking part in a "licking race" was banned by the UK's Advertising Standards Authority because the YouTubers failed to clearly identify the videos were marketing communications.

Here are five more of Gaga's recent ad-worthy Instagram selfies:

Lady Gaga is engaged

lady gaga

New York (AFP) - Pop diva Lady Gaga announced to the world that she is getting married -- to an actor she met making a video, in which she wore her mother's wedding dress.

The 28-year-old superstar, who has become as known for her extravagant outfits as for her music, revealed the engagement by showing a simple, heart-shaped ring that fiance Taylor Kinney gave her.

"He gave me his heart on Valentine's Day, and I said YES!" Gaga said in a caption to the picture she shared with her 5.5 million followers on Instagram on Monday.

Gaga met Kinney in 2011 when filming the video for "You & I" in the open fields of Nebraska. Despite the romantic title, the video was full of disturbing imagery including simulated torture of Gaga.

In a foreshadowing of the relationship to come, Gaga revealed that she wore her mother's wedding dress for the video. It also showed Gaga -- clad as a mermaid -- having sex with Kinney.

Kinney popped the question to Gaga, an Italian American whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, over a Valentine's Day dinner at the New York restaurant Joanne Trattoria which is owned by her parents, according to celebrity magazine Us Weekly.

Kinney, 33, has acted in a range of television shows, such as "Chicago Fire," and films.

He had a recurring role on the television series "The Vampire Diaries" and played a Navy SEAL in "Zero Dark Thirty," Kathryn Bigelow's controversial thriller about the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Gaga started off in the New York underground before her 2008 debut album "The Fame," with its infectious dance sound and her racy persona, became an unexpected global smash hit.

Her success was fueled by the popularity of her song "Poker Face," in which Gaga hints at her bisexuality and boyfriends' struggles to understand it.

Gaga became known for her sexually charged live shows as well as her outrage-inducing attire, including a dress made of raw meat that she wore to the MTV Video Music Awards in 2010.

More recently, Gaga has sought to show herself as more than a sensational persona. She has teamed up with 88-year-old Tony Bennett for an album of jazz standards, "Cheek to Cheek," accompanied by a tour with little of her past on-stage theatrics.

Lady Gaga was in talks to be the voice of Betty Boop in an upcoming film reboot

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga was in talks to voice cartoon flapper Betty Boop in Simon Cowell's upcoming Betty Boop feature film project, according to a series of leaked emails from the Sony Pictures hack published by Wikileaks.

Gaga was also in discussions to  contribute music to the film as of last fall.

Business Insider has since learned the film is going to another studio however, and that Lady Gaga will not be involved.

In an email sent by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Columbia Pictures vice president of production Lauren Abrahams on October 10th, 2014, Abrahams writes to then Sony Pictures co-chairwoman Amy Pascal and Motion Pictures Group President Doug Belgrad that "I wanted to make sure Syco/Animal Logic’s Betty Boop project is on your radar. Lady Gaga is attached to voice Betty Boop & do some of the music."

Abrahams then mentions that "Neither of us thinks we should do it, and we’ve also run the brand by marketing who aren’t inclined either," and questions the appeal of the film because "it feels weirdly sexualized yet childlike (esp with Gaga) and not sure really who it’s for in a big mainstream way."

Belgrad replies that "It sounds kind of weird to me to be honest. I don't mind if we don't chase it."

Abrahams then says she agrees, and mentions that "MGM is going to buy it."

Betty Boop was potentially going to be made by Fleischer Studios, who own the rights to Betty Boop, and produced by Simon Cowell's Syco Entertainment and Animal Logic Entertainment.

The film does not yet have a release date.

Business Insider has reached out to Sony for comment and will update this post if we hear back.

Update: An earlier version of this story stated that Lady Gaga would voice Betty Boop. A source familiar with the discussions now tells Business Insider that Gaga is not involved and Sony will not be producing this film.

Lady Gaga and members of Congress accept the paychecks of a tyrant

lady gaga azerbaijan

WHEN AZERBAIJAN opened the first European Games in Baku on June 12, the extravagant ceremony included a surprise appearance by Lady Gaga, who performed a 10-minute set, for which she was reportedly paid $2 million.

The singer delivered a rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine" while playing a piano covered in flowers.

So let's "imagine" what Leyla Yunus and her husband, Arif, were thinking as they sat that evening in an Azeri prison, held for nearly a year in pretrail detention on trumped-up charges intended to muzzle them.

Ms. Yunus, 59, a prominent human rights activist, and her husband, 60, a historian, have been accused of tax evasion and treason. Both suffer from serious health problems that have gone untreated during their ordeal.

In Baku this week, their first trial began, on the tax evasion charges. On Monday, Mr. Yunus, who suffers from cardiovascular disease, lost consciousness in the courtroom. He was treated but his symptoms persisted, and on subsequent days he could hardly sit up.

Ms. Yunus suffers from diabetes and other maladies. At the end of the week, the public prosecutor, Farid Naghiyev, demanded 11 years in prison for Ms. Yunus and nine years for her husband. The trial is to recommence next week, when both will address the court.

azerbaijan baku euro games

The trial is a travesty of justice and exposes the true intent of the prosecution — to silence these courageous voices. They should be released immediately. Nor are they the only ones to be treated so unjustly. President Ilham Aliyev has locked up about 100 political prisoners, including the gutsy investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova.

Emin Milli, who spent 16 months in Mr. Aliyev's prisons and went on to found Meydan TV, an independent online media platform in Berlin that publishes reports critical of the regime, says that the Azeri authorities recently arrested his brother-in-law and made "absurd and bogus accusations" of narcotics trafficking. "All this pressure had one purpose," Mr. Milli says, "to silence me personally and to silence Meydan TV . . . [a] small island of truth in the ocean of lies, repression and fear."

Mr. Aliyev behaves as if free speech and human rights are a trifle, and he bears primary responsibility for these abuses. But it is also worth asking: Who outside of Azerbaijan encourages such impunity? Who helps Mr. Aliyev get away with this?

Leyla yunus

In the West, there ought to be more concern for Azerbaijan's political prisoners among the Europeans who blithely participated in the June athletic games without so much as a glance outside the arena, and from the U.S. Congress members and staff who in 2013 made an expense-paid junket to Baku and were showered with gifts. And what about Lady Gaga, pop icon?

She performed while Mr. and Ms. Yunus, exponents of freedom and liberty, were languishing in prison, then accepted the oil-soaked paycheck of a tyrant. Just imagine.

Lady Gaga discovered how to be happy when she started saying one word a lot more often

lady gaga

For someone who's achieved so much as quickly as Lady Gaga, she's also had some serious low points. She's openly talked about dealing with drug addiction and the pressures of fame, and after the relative commercial failure of her last studio album, she took a break from her pop career and kept things under the radar.

But the artist otherwise known as Stefani Germanotta seems more self-assured now. She recently stopped by Yale to give a talk about her personal doubts and how she found happiness again. The speech is a little all over the place, in typical Gaga fashion, but it makes for some sobering life advice. Essentially, she says saying the word "no" made her a lot happier.

Here's what she had to say:

"I have had to make decisions like, why am I unhappy? Okay, Stefani/Gaga hybrid person, why are you unhappy? Why is that you want to quit music, a couple years ago? I was like, well I really don't like selling these fragrances, perfumes. I don't like wasting my time spending days just shaking people's hands and smiling and taking selfies. It feels shallow to my existence. I have a lot more to offer than my image. I don't like being used to make people money. I feel sad when I'm overworked and I just become a moneymaking machine and my passion and creativity take a backseat. That makes me unhappy.

So what did I do? I started to say no. I'm not doing that. I don't want to do that. I'm not taking that picture. I'm not going to that event. I'm not standing by that because that's not what I stand for. And slowly but surely, I remembered who I am, and then you go home, and you look in the mirror, and you're like, 'Yes, I can go to bed with you every night.' Because that person, I know that person. That person has balls, that person has integrity, that person has an opinion. That person doesn't say yes. That person doesn't get a text from somebody and say, 'Oh my God, they wrote this, and they sent this emoji, should I write this back? What do you think? Is that okay to say? Are they going to like me if I say that? Should I say something different? This is the age that we live in. We're not actually communicating with each other. We are unconsciously communicating lies."

Here's how Leo reacted when Gaga walked by and touched his chair. He managed to make a lot of faces.

The startled look from DiCaprio has become the moment everyone will talk about Monday from this year's Golden Globes, at least based on the amount of chatter on Twitter dissecting it.
