Leonardo DiCaprio explains the amazing Lady Gaga Vine from the Golden Globes

$

The most picked-apart moment of the Golden Globes wasn't a moving speech or an uncomfortable joke — it was a split-second interaction between Leonardo DiCaprio and Lady Gaga as she walked toward the stage to accept her award.

As Gaga brushed past his chair, DiCaprio gave her a puzzling look that people can't get enough of. The Vine, which has been looped more than 50 million times, is now being dissected all over the internet.

After the show, Entertainment Tonight got DiCaprio to talk about what happened. Much to the chagrin of the conspiracy theorists, he said he reacted the way he did because he was just surprised there was someone behind him.

"I just didn’t know what was passing me — that's all!" he said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Lady Gaga is set to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The NFL told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Gaga will sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, where the Carolina Panthers will take on the Denver Broncos.

Academy Award winning actress Marlee Matlin will perform in American Sign Language during the national anthem.

Super Bowl 50 will air on CBS, and halftime show performers include Coldplay and Beyonce.

Gaga's upcoming performance during the Super Bowl is another notch in her belt: She won a Golden Globe for her role in "American Horror Story: Hotel" last month and she's nominated for best original song at the Academy Awards on Feb. 28 with "Til It Happens to You," the song she wrote with Diane Warren for the sexual assault documentary, "The Hunting Ground." The song is also nominated for a Grammy at the Feb. 15 awards show, where Gaga will pay tribute to David Bowie with a performance.

Last year, Gaga wowed audiences at the Oscars when she paid tribute to "The Sound of Music" with a show-stopping performance. She won her sixth Grammy for her collaborative jazz album with Tony Bennett, and she was named woman of the year by Billboard.

Tony-winning actress and "Let It Go" singer Idina Menzel sang the national anthem at last year's Super Bowl.

In 2008, "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" made Lady Gaga one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. Her next album, "Born This Way," was also a success. But her third, "Artpop," couldn't catch on in the same way.

But a Golden Globe, an Oscar nomination, and a terrific performance singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl later, Lady Gaga is back in a big way.

Lady Gaga channeled Ziggy Stardust and more David Bowies in a moving tribute to the late legendary musician and pop icon.

Performing a mashup of a number of his hit songs, including  "Space Oddity,""Rebel Rebel," and "Heroes," which spanned his more-than-five-decade career, Gaga honored the musician who died January 10 after a battle with cancer. He had celebrated his 69th birthday, as well as the release of his newest album, "Blackstar," two days before.

Bright lights and eclectic costumes threw back to Bowie's 1973 "Aladdin Sane" album. Video projections recreated his lightning bolt on her face. She even played on a mechanical keyboard that moved and shifted on robotic legs.

According to E! Online, Gaga's tribute was one of the longer performances of the night.

lady gagaThe National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) president Neil Portnoy said, "She will take us through quite a bit of history of David Bowie's repertoire. It's one of the longest, larger segments of the night."

She also paid an homage to Bowie with her red-carpet look. Sporting dyed red hair, blue eye shadow, and a space-inspired outfit, Gaga was channeling Bowie's Ziggy Stardust era.

Gaga shared a video on Instagram preparing for the Grammys. She shed a tear as she listened to "Blackstar" off Bowie's newest and final album of the same name. "The world loves you David," she wrote.

Lady Gaga Grammy Awards Bowie Tribute

During the Grammy Awards on Monday night, Lady Gaga performed an incredible tribute to David Bowie with a medley of several of his greatest hits.

Lady Gaga as David Bowie

When David Bowie died in January, there was an outpouring of grief for the artist who made innovation in performance mainstream. To pay tribute to Bowie, Lady Gaga teamed up with the tech company Intel to produce a show that used holography, robotics, 3D motion graphics, and live video processing.

She performed nine Bowie songs in six minutes at the Grammys: "Space Oddity,""Changes,""Ziggy Stardust,""Suffragette City,""Rebel Rebel,""Fashion,""Fame,""Let's Dance" and "Heroes." The act was widely regarded as a big success, and the visual spectacle was incredible.

An Intel ad that aired immediately around the performance on CBS gave a behind-the-scenes view of the run-up to the Grammys. There was some criticism on Twitter that Intel aired its commercial immediately after the tribute, but without it viewers would know less about how the remarkable performance was put together.

Here's a rundown of the technologies Intel used:

To create the animated makeup on Gaga's face, Intel captured a 3D scan of her face in 12 different poses, Vanity Fair reported.

The result was a CGI spider crawling across Ziggy Stardust's signature lightning bolt.

Intel made holograms of dancers, Gaga, and Bowie himself for the performance.

Kendrick Lamar's fiery, political performance

Kendrick Lamar won big at the Grammys, taking home five awards, including best rap album, but it was his live performance that stood out for its powerful political message.

Lamar and his dancers emerged onstage dressed as prisoners in a chain gang as he performed a medley of "The Blacker the Berry,""Alright," and ended the performance with the debut of a new song. Midway through his mashup, Lamar and the dancers broke free from the chains to join African dancers and drummers around a blazing fire. He ended the performance standing in front of an image of Africa with Compton written inside. Lamar is from Compton in Los Angeles.

Lady Gaga tells people to stop 'victim shaming' Kesha — because it's happened to her too

lady gaga kesha

Lady Gaga has come out vocally in her support of Kesha.

She posted a message to her Instagram encouraging her fans not to belittle Kesha and added "#stopvictimshaming" to the caption.

Kesha is in an ongoing legal battle to get out of her contract with her producer Dr. Luke, who she alleges sexually abused her. Her contract with his label, owned by Sony, requires her to record six more albums.

Gaga's message said, "The very reason women don't speak up for years is the fear that no one will believe them or their abuser has threatened their life or life of their loved ones/livelihood in order to keep their victim quiet and under control. What happened to Kesha has happened to many female artists, including myself, and it will affect her for the rest of her life."

"No one needs to validate Kesha," she continued. "Why is victim always the 'liar'? Why do we let people in a position of power get away with behaving inhumanely? These guys hide behind the legal system and it's their litigious behavior that is precisely what they use to rape these girls. 'Give me what I want or else I will come after you' and they have all the money and the resources to do it."

The singer also shared a supportive message from California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom and a photo of Gaga holding hands with Kesha on her social-media accounts Wednesday.

Other entertainers including Adele, Lena Dunham, Taylor Swift, and Demi Lovato have supported Kesha during her complicated legal battle.

Lady Gaga: 'Nothing is more isolating than being famous'

Lady GagaLady Gaga may have named her debut album "The Fame" in 2008, but today that's not what she's after.

"I don’t think I could think of a single thing that’s more isolating than being famous," Lady Gaga recently said during Variety and PBS’ Actors on Actors series.

"It’s almost impossible for people even to probably look at my career and the things I’ve done and think, 'Oh, she didn’t want [that] — of course she wanted to be famous, of course she wanted all that attention.' It’s just, creative expression is what I am and I would’ve been doing this whether I became famous or not," explained Gaga.

"I wouldn’t have given up to try to get famous in another way," she added. "I wanted to get a job being creative and I did."

GagaGaga isn't the only celeb to be outspoken for her disdain of fame.

Megan Fox said in a 2013 interview with Esquire: "What people don’t realize is that fame, whatever your worst experience in high school, when you were being bullied by those 10 kids in high school, fame is that, but on a global scale, where you’re being bullied by millions of people constantly."

"Twilight" actress Kristen Stewart told Harper's Bazaar in 2015: "Fame is the worst thing in the world. Especially if it’s pointless. When people say, 'I want to be famous' – why? You don’t do anything?"

"The Hangover" star  Zach Galifianakis said during a 2014 press conference: "Being a celebrity is s---, it's dumb and I'm not interested in it. I like to be an actor, and that's it."

Hundreds of celebrities signed an open letter demanding that Congress 'stop gun violence now'

Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry were among the hundreds of celebrities who signed an open letter from Billboard magazine to Congress on the issue of gun-control reform on Thursday.

The letter, "An Open Letter to Congress: Stop Gun Violence Now," finds an impressive and extensive list of artists and music-industry executives throwing their voices into "the chorus of Americans demanding change," following the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida.

"Music always has been celebrated communally, on dancefloors and at concert halls," the letter reads. "But this life-affirming ritual, like so many other daily experiences — going to school or church or work — now is threatened, because of gun violence in this country."

In the letter, Billboard and the celebrity signees call on Congress to implement two measures: to "Require a background check for every gun sale" and to "Block suspected terrorists from buying guns." The US Senate rejected both proposals in a recent vote.

The letter is preceded by an editor's note that mentions how musician Joan Jett was the first to sign the letter. Lady Gaga followed suit shortly after, and then, "in a matter of just a few days, nearly 200 top artists and executives" joined the effort.

Read the open letter over at Billboard.

Why Lady Gaga was just banned from China

dalai lama and lady gaga

For the second time in her career, singer Lady Gaga has been banned from China — this time for meeting with the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader who has been exiled from the Communist country since 1959.

The 30-year-old pop singer met with the Dalai Lama on Sunday before his keynote address at the United States Conference of Mayors in Indianapolis. The two spoke for nearly 20 minutes in a video that Gaga posted to her Facebook page

In the video, which has since been viewed over 3 million times, Gaga and the Dalai Lama discuss a wide range of topics— including suicide, yoga, and the trials of living in a materialistic world.

The Chinese government reacted to the meeting by issuing "an important instruction" that effectively banned Gaga from mainland China and asked media outlets to stop uploading and playing her work, according to China's pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily

The Dalai Lama was exiled from Tibet in 1959 after he fled arrest from Mao Zedong's Communist government by leaving China for India.

Lady Gaga was previously banned from China in 2011, along with dozens of other pop artists, for having "poor taste and vulgar content."

Business Insider has reached out to representatives of Lady Gaga for comment on the ban.

The Emmys prove 'American Horror Story' just needs to die

$

AHS Lady Gaga

Last year, "American Horror Story" reached a peak.

"Freak Show" earned 19 Emmy Award nominations, a best for Ryan Murphy's anthology series.

This year was something else entirely. "Hotel," which won Lady Gaga her first Golden Globe Award and was also nominated for a Globe itself, only garnered eight nominations for the 68th Emmy Awards — a series worst.

The irony is that "American Horror Story" brought on the anthology/limited series phenomenon, giving rise to current Emmy darling "The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story," and now it's being edged out.

"Freak Show" wasn't exactly the greatest season — that could be awarded to "Coven" or "Murder House"— but it gained more recognition for its actors, thus a big boost in nomination numbers. (It had the same number of creative arts Emmys as its first and second seasons.)

But "Hotel" was when things really began to drop off. Jessica Lange was gone and her absence hung over the show like a ghost in the Murder House. Lady Gaga delivered a surprisingly great performance, but it's a death sentence to be compared to the powerhouse that is Jessica Lange.

"Hotel" had half of the creative arts Emmy nominations as the previous "AHS" seasons (six in comparison to the average 12), and only two acting nominations, for Emmy darling Sarah Paulson and Academy Award winner Kathy Bates. If you're going to give the show something, it's hard to complain about those two.

"AHS" was almost always a guarantee for the main title design and miniseries nominations, but "Hotel" was the first installment to not receive a nomination for either.

Series creator Ryan Murphy has a reputation. He smartly creates a new show that is unlike anything else on TV — there weren’t nearly as many anthology shows until "American Horror Story" blazed onto the scene — and lets it thrive for a few years before throwing it to the flames for a new project. He ditched "Nip/Tuck" for "Glee" then "Glee" for "American Horror Story" and now he's throwing over "AHS" for "Scream Queens" and "American Crime Story."

The man gets bored. It's showing.

Break the cycle. It's time for Murphy to pull the plug. He needs to stop dragging along "AHS" and just put the focus on "Scream Queens"— it needs the attention — and "American Crime Story.""AHS" is no longer worth the risk of lessening the quality of the two newer and successful shows.

It had its time, and now it's over.

'American Horror Story' released new teasers that hint at the most gruesome season yet

American Horror Story season 6 tease

Last year, fans knew the latest theme of "American Horror Story" nine months before the fifth season premiered.

But here we are about two months before the September 14 premiere of the sixth installment in Ryan Murphy's anthology series, and there's no official word about the theme of the season.

But we finally have the first teasers, which were released on Snapchat on Wednesday.

In the clips, the "6" indicating the season number is joined by a question mark, as it has been on the show's Facebook page since June.

The teasers are all terrifying and freaky in the typical "AHS" style.

There's a crib with a knife and fish hook as a mobile; a set of steps with hands that pop out and grab a woman's ankle; a bug crawling over a woman's (Lady Gaga's?) face; a seemingly possessed family walking in the sunset; and the "6" and "?" being stapled into a man's head and later blowing out as smoke from a farmhouse's chimney.

Initially, the torture-house vibe feels very much like "Hostel," the horror film in which college students abroad are kidnapped and tortured by a sadistic group. The tools hanging from the mobile, the poor individual meeting the business end of a staple gun, and the likely slicing of a woman's Achille's heel wouldn't be out of place in an Eli Roth movie.

The family with illuminated eyes seem right out of "The Strangers" or maybe even the Buckners from Joss Whedon's "The Cabin in the Woods." It's probably their farmhouse that has some serious smoke problems.

Combining both of those ideas, season six could venture into "The Hills Have Eyes" territory.

Season six could also be potentially linked to the first season, "Murder House." Ryan Murphy decided to change his mind and decree that all of the "AHS" seasons are connected, which he initially denied. So it would make sense that season six would go back to a major unanswered plot point from season one: Michael.

Michael was the demon baby born at the end of "Murder House" and adopted by Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange). The last time we saw young Michael was when he was three and smiling in a rocking chair after he had brutally killed the housekeeper.

Will we finally see what's up with the antichrist? Hopefully, and hopefully it means Jessica Lange returns.
